«La via prosegue senza fine»: Gli Hobbit in viaggio nelle opere di Tolkien

Il seguente contributo ha lo scopo di esaminare la specificità dell’eroismo nelle opere di J.R.R. Tolkien, con particolare riferimento a quello dimostrato dagli Hobbit durante i rispettivi viaggi nelle opere principali dello scrittore. Dal confronto ragionato tra i due protagonisti Bilbo Baggins e suo nipote Frodo, dei veri e propri anti-eroi moderni carichi di contraddizioni e consapevoli dei propri limiti, si intende individuare un eroismo parallelo a quello incarnato dagli uomini e da Aragorn, ovvero un percorso in cui le numerose prove a cui è sottoposto l’eroe conducono a un rinnovamento del mondo. Nel caso degli Hobbit, la via conduce a una crescita personale, ma che li separerà dalla comunità della Contea. Ciò si lega direttamente al tema dell’esilio e del ritorno: in Tolkien, infatti, per entrambi questi piccoli Portatori dell’Anello, toccati profondamente dal Male, non c’è più posto nella Terra di Mezzo. E se Bilbo ha lasciato volontariamente la Contea per trovare riposo tra gli Elfi, questo non può essere sufficiente per Frodo, che non troverà mai più pace. Così il tema del viaggio, pur seguendo direttrici diverse avrà lo stesso esito, l’esilio, altro motivo fondamentale per le opere dello scrittore inglese. 

The following paper aims to examine the specific nature of heroism in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, with particular reference to that demonstrated by the Hobbits during their travels in writer’s major works. By a reasoned comparison between the two main characters Bilbo Baggins and his nephew Frodo, true anti-modern heroes loaded with contradictions and conscious of their own limits, we intend to find a symmetrical heroism to that embodied by men and by Aragorn, or a path full of trials leading to a renewal of the world. In the case of the Hobbits, the path leads to personal growth, but that will separate them from the communities of the Shire. This is directly linked to the themes of exile and return: in Tolkien’s work, in fact, for both these Ring-bearers, deeply touched by the Evil, there is no more place in Middle-earth. And if Bilbo left the Shire voluntarily to find rest between the Elves, this may not be enough to Frodo, he shall not find peace ever. So the theme of the journey, while following different lines, will have the same outcome, exile, another fundamental motif in Tolkien’s works.
